About The Vacancy Project

Ever noticed all the empty storefronts and vacant lots in Petaluma’s downtown core? We have — and we’re doing something about it.

Many owners want to bring their property back to life, and we’re here to help make that happen: advancing policies and practical solutions, unlocking funding, and building the coalition needed to turn empty spaces into vibrant ones.

The project

The Vacancy Project documents every vacant lot and empty building within a half-mile of downtown Petaluma — block by block, with photos, public records, and revenue research — and organizes the coalition working to bring those sites back to life.

Our goals

• Make the scale of the opportunity visible, with an accurate, block-by-block map.
• Advance smart policy that lowers the friction of redevelopment.
• Unlock funding and partnerships that make good projects pencil.
• Mobilize property owners, businesses, and neighbors to act together.

The coalition

The Vacancy Project is an initiative of Petaluma Urban Chat, co-sponsored at launch by Renaissance Petaluma. The coalition brings together property owners, community members, local organizations, business and labor leaders, and public officials.
